Uniforms through the years--NBA

In this last installment of "uniforms that should not be changed" we look at the NBA. There are not a lot of uniforms in the NBA that couldn't use an upgrade. They have become, for the most part, pretty boring. There is a difference betweem "boring" and "simple." The Knicks, the Pacers, the Clippers--their uniforms are boring. The following are simple, but cool:


4) Boston Celtics



The third team from Boston in this roundup. I remember growing up as a 76'ers fan, cringing just hearing the words "Boston Celtics."


3) Chicago Bulls



Da Bulls! Chicago becomes the second city with three teams. They got rid of the script "Chicago" on the road jerseys and went with the block letter "Bulls" for the Michael Jordan Era, and haven't looked back. Throw in the bull's head on the shorts...


2) Los Angeles Lakers



They recently tried ditching the gold home jerseys and going with white ones. Eh, not so much.

1) San Antonio Spurs




Silver and Black. What more can you say? Don't change a thing.

Uniforms through the years--NHL

Next in our look at sports uniforms through the years is part 2 of uniforms that should never change. Uniforms that are so steeped in tradition that any changes would be seen as cause for riot. This time, the NHL. And if there are any group of teams that should be legally prevented from changing their uniform designs, it's the "Original Six":


6) New York Rangers




Kinda boring, yeah. This is one case where simple is kinda, eh. But is is traditional, and better than those stupid "alternate" jerseys (which every team should do away with).


5) Boston Bruins




Where did the design come from? Who knows, but the colors are cool. Black and gold is always a good combo, and has stood up to the test of time for the Bruins.


4) Montreal Canadiens



"Les Habitants" have hoisted the Cup 23 times. And have always looked good doing it.


3) Detroit Red Wings



Gotta love the red on white winged wheel design. Like the Tigers, keeping it simple in Detroit looks good.



2) Toronto Maple Leafs




Great shade of blue, eh. And the road jerseys are really good, too.


1) Chicago Black Hawks





'Nuff said. At most sports stores, this jersey usually goes for a much higher price than other hockey jerseys. And for good reason.

Uniforms through the years

I have always been a keen observer of sports uniforms through the years. I recall watching a 1977 TV-movie called "Murder at the World Series", which was about, oddly enough, an assassination attempt at a World Series ficticiously pitting the Oakland A's against the Houston Astros. I remember thinking "Wow! Are those really the Astros real uniforms! They're so cool!!"

Well, I have decided to compile some of the best and worst uniform changes, some that were kinda "eh...", some that should NEVER be changed, and some that need to come back. To start off, some uniforms that should NEVER be changed.
Part 1--MLB uniforms

5) The St. Louis Cardinals



It's just classy. From the word "Cardinals" , the bat through the "C", and that shade of cardinal (which is, oddly enough, where the team nickname comes from), the only thing that could make it better would be to bring back the blue polyester pullover road jerseys from the Ozzie Smith Era.


4) Detroit Tigers



The Old English "D" (yeah, I know it's been co-opted by Eminem and all his little wannabes) on the hat and home jersey. It's simple, and sometimes, simple works best.


3) Los Angeles Dodgers



I ain't no fan of thuhhhDODGers (with apolgies to Vin Scully), but hey, what can you say about Dodger Blue? Oh, and to whoever owns the team--stop messing with the uni's! They're fine just the way they are!


2) Boston Red Sox



This is the second entry I hate to put on here. I can't stand the Red Sox, but they do have one of the classiest uniforms in MLB. But not THE best. That distinction belongs to....


1) New York Yankees



Nobody wears pinstripes as well as the Bombers! In fact, you can't even mention the word "pinstripes" without thinking of the 26-time World Series Champions. No names on the back, no numbers on the front. Just the interlocking Tiffany "NY" on the front and a number on the back. And like their history, it speaks for itself.
